Expressionist Style

Time period: 1905-1920

Emerging in Germany as a response to world anxieties about lost authenticity and spirituality and a reaction against both academy and impressionist art, Expressionism was influenced by Symbolist currents in late 19th Century art. Van Gogh, Munch and Ensor were influential to this movement, with their distortion of form and color to convey discontent and yearnings. Spreading throughout Europe, Expressionism lasted roughly from 1905 to 1920, and influenced the development of Abstract Expressionism through the 20th century, and Neo-Expressionism in the 1980’s.
