Modern Period

Time period: 1860 – 1945

Most Modern Art works were international in scope, starting with the Impressionists, through Arts & Crafts Movement, Symbolism, Post-Impressionism, Art Nouveau, Cubism and Futurism in Europe, followed by Art Expressionism and Abstract Expressionism in the US and Outsider Art in the US and UK in the 1940’s. Modern art is hallmarked by art intended to move away from traditional narratives, to abstraction. Art produced at the end of this period is also often considered Contemporary or Post Modern.
